Reimagining Fostering Together

Black Foster Carers Alliance (BFCA) is a specialist consultancy and community-rooted organisation working with local authorities, commissioners and fostering providers to improve outcomes for Black and Global Majority children in care.

At the heart of everything we do is one key priority: strengthening the recruitment, development and retention of Black and Global Majority foster carers.

We work alongside the fostering system — not to replace what already exists, but to strengthen, enrich and extend it. Our role is to bring cultural expertise, lived experience and community insight into statutory and commissioned services so they are more trusted, more responsive and more effective for the families they serve. reduce to 100 words

Why Mediation Matters

Mediation is essential for retaining foster carers because it helps to:

  • Prevent Burnout: Addressing issues promptly can prevent carers from feeling overwhelmed and unsupported.
  • Build Trust: Effective mediation builds trust between carers and the organization, making carers feel valued and heard.
  • Enhance Stability: Resolving conflicts quickly ensures a stable environment for both carers and the children in their care.
  • Promote Longevity: Carers are more likely to stay long-term when they know there is a reliable system in place to support them through challenges.
  • By investing in mediation, you are investing in the well-being and retention of your foster carers, ensuring they feel supported and valued in their crucial role.

Standard of Care Investigations

We provide independent, culturally informed standard of care investigations to support fostering services, local authorities and carers where concerns have been raised about practice, safeguarding or service delivery.

Our approach is fair, proportionate and trauma-informed, ensuring investigations are conducted with integrity while protecting children, carers and organisations. We bring cultural intelligence, sector expertise and lived experience to identify whether standards have been met, where practice may have fallen short, and what improvements are required.

Our investigations support learning and improvement — not blame — and help organisations strengthen safeguarding, restore trust and demonstrate accountability to regulators, commissioners and families.

This service supports:

  • Safeguarding assurance

  • Fair and balanced investigations

  • Practice improvement and learning

  • Confidence in decision-making and outcomes

Recruitment & Rentention

We support fostering services to build sustainable recruitment and retention systems that attract, prepare and retain foster carers — particularly from Black and Global Majority communities.

Our support spans the full carer journey, from culturally informed recruitment and assessment preparation through to post-approval mentoring and early-stage retention support. By strengthening preparation, communication and support, we help reduce early withdrawals, placement breakdowns and avoidable carer attrition.

This is not short-term recruitment activity. It is a preventative, system-strengthening approach that improves safeguarding, assessment quality and long-term stability for children and carers.

This service supports:

  • Improved recruitment outcomes

  • Stronger assessment quality

  • Reduced early attrition

  • Greater placement stability and carer confidence
