Crown & Current

Confidence in the water.
Pride in their identity.

We combine expert swimming lessons with protective hair care and identity confidence work to help Black and Global Majority children and young people feel safe, supported and seen.

OUR APPROACH

Two Pillars. One Purpose.

We bring swimming and hair care together to build confidence, celebrate identity and create lasting impact. Most learn-to-swim provision asks Black children to choose between taking part and looking after their hair. Crown & Current removes that choice.

Learn to swim

Qualified, culturally aware instructors teaching in small groups, building water confidence and safety skills that last a lifetime.

  • Small, supportive groups
  • Instructors who understand the barriers
  • Water safety for life

Protective hair care and identity

Practical guidance that respects Afro-textured and mixed-texture hair, taught alongside the work of building identity and self-esteem.

  • Protective styling before and after swimming
  • Cap fitting and aftercare that actually works
  • Identity, confidence and self-expression

In the water

Qualified swim instruction in a learner pool, delivered in small groups at a pace that builds genuine water confidence. Beginners are welcome and expected.

Out of the water

Dedicated time and space for post-swim hair care, led by people who understand Afro-textured and mixed-texture hair. Young people learn to care for their own crown.

Water safety

Practical water-safety learning is woven into the programme so young people develop skills and confidence that extend beyond the lesson

Identity & belonging

The programme reflects BFCA's wider identity-affirming approach, helping children feel seen, understood and confident in who they are.

More than learning a skill

Crown & Current is about more than learning a skill. It creates a safe, affirming space where young people can develop confidence in the water, care for their hair and grow into their best selves.
